Hinduism is considered as the oldest religion in the world. There are many Hindu deities unlike a lot of other religions of the world. Hinduism is referred to as Apauruseya, meaning its origin doesn’t have any relation to individuals. Religious texts refer to Hindu gods in the same manner. You will see that there are a lot of deities in Hindu religion but they are all a part of the ultimate truth. Brahman is the supreme power in this universe.
Description of God According to Religious Scriptures
Holy scriptures of Hinduism have mentioned the characteristics of a god in them. As he is the ultimate power in the universe, everything that happens should be known to him. He reflects justice, love and beauty. He is the creator of this universe, so he is always ready to bless the living and non-living beings and shower his grace on them. Rig Veda says that 12 Adityas, 11 Rudras, eight Vasus, Prajapathi and Indra are the masters of the Heaven, the Space and the Earth. The Holy Scripture also explains, even though there are many gods in Hinduism, the ultimate power is only one i.e. the truth is one.
As per the two concepts Adhikaara and Ishta Devaa, of Hindu philosophy, devotees can select any god appropriate to their own beliefs and spiritual inclination, to fulfill their spiritual needs.
Main Gods
There are several gods and goddesses and it is not easy to classify or arrange them in any order. But Hindus believe that Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva are extremely revered because they protect, create and destroy the universe. Apart from these male deities, goddesses are also revered, who originated from Shakti. Lakshmi, Parvati and Saraswati are 3 important goddesses in Hinduism. Kali and Durga are also considered to be forms of Shakti.
All male and female deities have different forms and they are also revered by people. Krishna, Ganesha, Rama and Hanuman are considered to be favorites of several Hindus. Devis and Devas are another name for Goddesses and Gods.
Important Incarnations
In Hinduism, importance is given to the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Hindu worshippers believe that, to eliminate the evil powers from the world, Lord Vishnu takes birth in each and every Yuga. There are ten avtars of Vishnu. They are Balarama, Vamana, Matsya, Koorma, Varaha, Narasimha, Rama, Parashurama, Krishna and Khalki. Protector Vishnu takes birth as Khalki (his tenth avtar) in the present epoch (Kaliyuga), as per the believers of Hindu religion.
Hindus also worship sun, air, water, fire and earth. They also have the name 5 elements. Believers of Hinduism worship fauna and flora, considering them as gifts of God.
