Hinduism is considered as the oldest religion in the world. There are a lot of Hindu Gods and Goddesses unlike many other religions of the world. Hinduism is referred to as Apauruseya, meaning it does not have link with any individual or group of individuals. Gods in Hinduism are referred to like this. One can find a lot of gods in Hindu religion however all are part of the ultimate power of this universe. The supreme power is called as Brahman.

Qualities of God According to Scriptures

The characteristics of God have been described clearly in scriptures of Hindu religion. God is the most powerful entity so he must know all about the universe. Beauty, justice and love are parts of him. He has created this universe, so he is always ready to bless the living and non-living beings and shower his grace on them. According to Rig Veda, the Earth, the Heaven and the Space are ruled by Prajapathi, Indra, 12 Adityas, 8 Vasus and eleven Rudras. The holy Scripture also mentions that even though there are various deities present in Hindu religion, the absolute power is one.


Hinduism explains 2 philosophies called Ishta Devaa and Adhikaara, as per which devotees can select any deity who can satisfy their spiritual needs. A person is given all the freedom to select a deity to find answers to his.

Important Deities in Hinduism

There are a lot of gods and goddesses and one can not classify or arrange them in any order. But Hindu religion speaks of Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu to be performing destruction, creation and preservation of the world, which are important processes in the universe. Goddesses who are different avtars of Shakti also has an important place in Hindu religion in addition to Gods. Among these female deities Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati are very important. Kali and Durga are parts of the power Shakti.

People worship various other forms of these Devas and Devis. There are many devotees for Rama, Krishna, Hanuman and Ganesha, worldwide. Gods and goddesses are also called Devas and Devis.

Main Avtars

According to Hinduism, the main avtars are the ten avtars of the preserver, Lord Vishnu. Hindu worshippers believe that, to destroy the Adharmic powers from the world, Lord Vishnu re-incarnates in each and every Yuga. Lord Vishnu takes birth 10 times. They are Matsya, Koorma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Balarama and Khalki. Hindu devotees believe that the current yuga is Kaliyuga, in which preserver Vishnu is in the form of Khalki, who is the tenth avtar.


Earth, sun, water, air and fire are also worshipped by Hindus. These are also called as 5 elements. Trees, plants and animals are also respected by Hindus and are considered as gifts.
